About 'Ghetto Czernowitz'
In early October 1941, a Jewish ghetto was created in Chernivtsi (Cernăuţi, Czernowitz). Persons of Jewish nationality were forcibly displaced and forcibly held on its territory. The ghetto was used as a starting point for the deportation of the Jewish population to the death camps in Transnistria.
In order to convey full information about the history of the creation of the ghetto, the fate of its inhabitants and their lives, the events that took place in the ghetto and associated with it, the ‘Ghetto Czernowitz’ webpage as a project was initiated. It was initiated by the NGO ‘Jewish Heritage of Bukovina’ (Project Coordinator), the Jewish Religious Community of Bukovina / Main Synagogue of Bukovina named after Israel and Zelda Maiberg, Chernivtsi Regional Jewish Community.
For the implementation of the 'Ghetto Czernowitz' Project, it is envisaged to create a single systemic information resource 'Ghetto Czernowitz', which will contain information about the history of the creation of the ghetto, a specially created interactive map of the ghetto, photo and video materials about the ghetto, memories of ghetto victims, scientific and documentary publications about the ghetto in Chernivtsi, as well as information about them.
Within the framework of the Project, it is planned to fix the boundaries of the ghetto by installing in accessible places floor slabs with a yellow star of David, as well as a QR code on them. By scanning the QR code, anyone will be able to access an interactive map of the ghetto and the ‘Ghetto Czernowitz’ information resource. It is also planned to install an interactive information board in the center of the territory where the ghetto was located. The implementation of the Project will be covered in the media, as well as with the support of specially invited experts. A number of scientific and educational events are also planned.
We are glad to any cooperation and will certainly consider any suggestions and support for the ‘Ghetto Czernowitz’ Project implementation.
